What is clean eating?
The concept of “clean eating” or “eating clean” is very simple.
A basic definition would be eating real, whole foods that have not been processed or have been as minimally processed as possible. This means consuming real food from nature as opposed to prepackaged foods (boxed, bagged, frozen) that were made in a factory. A clean eating diet consists primarily of fresh fruits, vegetables, grains, dairy, and protein.
Clean eating does not necessarily mean gluten free, paleo, sugar-free, low fat, low carb, KETO or vegan, although you can be paleo, vegan, vegetarian or gluten-free and also be eating clean.
To go further, many consider “clean eating” to also be a lifestyle as it usually includes eating 5 times a day (breakfast, snack, lunch, snack, dinner), eating organic and local foods, and preparing meals ahead of time (food prepping) so one doesn’t have to eat restaurant prepared or boxed/frozen food for work lunches or while traveling.
You will see people living this lifestyle and meal prepping frequently in the fitness community and especially among fitness competitors.
